Watched any good movies lately? You know, the kind that are set a few centuries ago and show period costumes and amazing historic locations? Maybe they inspire you to read a book and find out some real history, real stories of people who lived in some truly amazing times.
Now imagine yourself in the middle of history at a memorable location. Maybe an old fort, a battlefield, an isolated cabin or a great hall of government. It’s hard not to get caught up in the narratives that cling to places older than many generations of your ancestors.
Take the place shown above, a guard room at Castillo de San Marcos. This is part of an old Spanish fortress in St. Augustine, Florida. Attacked twice and changing hands half a dozen times over the years, it’s a worthy setting for historical shots.
On one level, it seems obvious; but next time you’re searching for a photo op, don’t stop at looking for a place to see the sites. Research the history of your local area and put yourself in the place of the people who lived through it. There’s a good chance your passion to do justice to the past will come through in your shots.
