Cool Gear: The Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT

Of all the tripods I’ve used, this one is my favorite so far. It’s aluminum, so it’s a bit heavier that the equivalent carbon-fiber model but not excessively so. It’s sturdy and its legs can be splayed out to place the camera only a few inches above the ground.

But its best feature by far is the ability to detach the central post and reattach it at an angle. The practical upshot of this is to allow the camera to peek around corners hands-free.

Case in point: on a trip to a local ghost town, I was able to use this tripod to poke my camera’s lens into an abandoned coal cellar that looked a little too dangerous to stand in. A remote shutter release completed the setup and helped to get the shot safely.
